Dear Wayne-Westland Families,

Wayne-Westland Community Schools - National Suicide Prevention Month

September is National Suicide Prevention Month. This month is an opportune time to revisit the warning signs of mental health distress and how we can provide support.

Recognizing Mental Health Struggles as a Parent

In the video How Do I Recognize the Signs and Help My Child Struggling with Mental Health Problems, families share their experiences—what they noticed, what they missed, and how they responded when their child faced mental health distress. Additional resources include:

The National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (9-8-8) is a free, confidential service available 24/7 to support individuals in distress and provide prevention and crisis resources for families and professionals. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among individuals aged 10-24. We encourage parents/guardians to discuss the lifeline with their children, highlighting its easy accessibility. For students in grades 6-12, this number is also printed on the back of their student IDs.

Additionally, Wayne-Westland Community Schools District offers Care Solace, a complimentary and confidential service that can help those seeking professional help find mental health or substance use providers.
