The class of 2007 was awarded in excess of $3.6 million in scholarship monies from universities and colleges, local scholarships, merit, and competitive awards.
Walker-Winter was awarded the Wayne-Westland Board of Education Lighthouse School Award for continuous, meritorious performance on MEAP tests over a several year period. Madison Elementary, as a second time recipient, was honored with a Lighthouse School Encore Award.
Elliott, Hicks, Hoover, Jefferson-Barns, Patchin and Taft-Galloway are recipients of the U.S. Department of Education Reading Grant. The six schools will receive $2.4 million dollars over a three-year period to enhance reading instruction and assessments in grades K-3.
Wayne RESA (Regional Educational Service Agency) produced a video highlighting the successes of Adams Middle School in their transitioning to a Professional Learning Community.
The annual Michigan State Police Safety inspection of our bus fleet resulted in a passing rate of 90%. Wayne-Westland's passing rate compare very favorably to the county and state averages.
Students at the William D. Ford Career Technical Center took top honors at the 2006 Convergence Conference in Detroit for their Innovative Vehicle Design. Their electric car won "Best in Performance" and the "Ambassador Trophy".
The Henry Ford Youth Mentorship Program, which allows Wayne-Westland high school students to earn credit by working side-by-side with a fulltime employee of the Henry Ford, was a finalist for the 2007 Governor's Service Awards. The program was honored by Governor Granholm at the Fox Theater in Detroit.
MEAP scores continue to rise in Wayne-Westland. Reading and math scores exceed county and/or state averages in multiple grades at the elementary and middle school level.
Walker-Winter Elementary School was identified by the Michigan State Board of Education as a Michigan Blue Ribbon Exemplary School for their educational excellence. Walker-Winter joins Edison Elementary as the second Blue Ribbon recipient in the past three years.
Patchin Elementary School was awarded $10,000.00 by the Board of Education for meeting the Golden Apple criteria for improved MEAP scores as designated by the State of Michigan under Public Act 191. This brings the district total to fourteen (14) schools that have received Golden Apples for MEAP scores.
