Middle School Special Education

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Co-Teaching

Adams, Franklin, Marshall, and Stevenson Middle Schools offer special education support on a teacher consultant basis and in the form of co-teaching. Co-teaching is for students who are special education eligible and who have been determined to need an additional level of support beyond consultation. Co-teaching is a service delivery partnership between general and special education. Our model of co-teaching supports eligible students in general education core content classes which are taught by a team consisting of a highly qualified general education teacher and a special education teacher. All students are taught to Michigan Grade Level Core Content Expectations. Accommodations may be necessary for some special education eligible students.

In addition to being enrolled in co-taught classes, some eligible students may demonstrate a need for additional support. Teachers may refer an eligible student for a skill class which is designed to further support progress and achievement in the general curriculum. Skill classes are taught by a special education teacher and support the general education courses in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies respectively. Elective credit is earned in these classes.

Adams, Franklin, Marshall and Stevenson also house:

  • A district-wide cross-categorical program for special education students who require life skills support in addition to applied academics and self-advocacy. Typically, students enroll in applied academic and pre-vocational classes.

Adams, Franklin, and Marshall house:

  • A district-wide transition program for special education students who require behavioral support. Transition basic classroom is for students who are special education eligible and who have been determined to need an additional level of support beyond consultation. Core academic and social skills are taught in this classroom. It is expected that students will benefit from the alternative programming offered to meet their unique needs and that they will return to the co-taught program and continue their academic and behavioral success.

Adams also houses:

  • The Wayne RESA Southwestern Region classroom programs for students with Severe Cognitive Impairment (SCI). This program typically focuses on activities of daily living, and includes adaptive physical education and aquatics, and community based instruction (CBI), that is appropriate for the age, skills, and interest levels of these students.

Marshall also houses:

  • The Wayne RESA Western Region classroom program for students with a Physical or Otherwise Health Impairment (POHI). This program mixes academic classes with activities of daily living which include adaptive physical education and aquatics, and community based instruction (CBI), that is appropriate for the age, skills, and interest levels of these students.
  • The Wayne RESA Southwestern Region classroom programs for students with Severe Multiple Impairment (SXI). This program typically focuses on activities of daily living, and includes adaptive physical education and aquatics, and community based instruction (CBI), that is appropriate for the age, skills, and interest levels of these students.

Transition
It is strongly encouraged that students transitioning to the middle school programs, or from the middle school to the high school programs visit their neighborhood school or basic classroom program to ease the anxiety of the level change. Together, we will make these life experiences positive for the student and her/his parents.
