Elementary Special Education

Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
All Elementary Schools offer special education support on a teacher consultant basis and in the form of resource room. Teacher consultant service is a partnership between general and special education. Our model of teacher consulting supports eligible students in general education core content classes which are taught by highly qualified general education teachers. All students are taught to Michigan Grade Level Core Content Expectations. Accommodations may be necessary for some special education eligible students.

Resource room is for students who are special education eligible and who have been determined to need an additional level of support beyond consultation. Resource room classes are taught by a special education teacher and replaces the general education courses in English Language Arts and/or Mathematics.

Graham, Kettering, and Lincoln also house:

  • A district-wide cross-categorical program for special education students who require life skills support in addition to applied academics and self-advocacy.

Hoover, Lincoln, Madison, and Wildwood also house:

  • A district-wide transition program for special education students who require behavioral support. Transition basic classroom is for students who are special education eligible and who have been determined to need an additional level of support beyond consultation. Core academic and social skills are taught in this classroom. It is expected that students will benefit from the alternative programming offered to meet their unique needs and that they will return to the teacher consultant or resource room program in their neighborhood school and continue their academic and behavioral success.

Roosevelt-McGrath also houses:

  • The Wayne RESA Western Region classroom program for students with a Physical or Otherwise Health Impairment (POHI). This program mixes academic classes with activities of daily living which include adaptive physical education and aquatics, and community based instruction (CBI), that is appropriate for the age, skills, and interest levels of these students.
  • The Wayne RESA Southwestern Region classroom programs for students with Severe Cognitive Impairment (SCI) or Multiple Impairment (SXI). These programs typically focus on activities of daily living and include adaptive physical education and aquatics, and community based instruction (CBI), that is appropriate for the age, skills, and interest levels of these students.

Transition
It is strongly encouraged that students transitioning to the middle school programs, or from the preschool to the elementary school programs visit their neighborhood school or basic classroom program to ease the anxiety of the level change. Together, we will make these life experiences positive for the student and her/his parents.
